Every year I have been fortunate enough to take an annual Summer trip with my family. However, this year is a little different—my mother booked a trip to China with her friends, which means no family vacation for me. That being said, I decided to take the liberty and plan my own trip with a couple friends last month.

The process of planning a trip has been way more stressful than I anticipated. We started looking at websites like Contiki and EF Ultimate Break where they offer tour packages for people ages 18 to about 30. I found packages to be convenient because it lessened the trouble and cost of booking hotels and arranging transportation. On top of that, traveling with a group also gives us the opportunity to make new friends along the way.

Through those websites we found amazing destinations to go to like Costa Rica, Italy, Vietnam, and Greece—the options seemed endless. But because we are trying to plan an international trip last minute slots were full and airfare was expensive. We started giving up and stopped looking for a while. It wasn’t until a month later I decided to look again and to my surprise, I found the perfect trip to countries that neither I nor my friends have been to before—Scotland and England. I’m excited that we have finally figured out what to do this coming Summer.

If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know!

  1. Sounds awesome. It's good that you took initiative to plan your own trip when the plans with your mom fell through. I highly recommend checking for cheap flights with "Zip Lagged". I've been to Costa Rica, Italy and Greece - if you are looking for a very adventurous trip, I'd recommend Costa Rica. But if you're just looking to relax by the beach and explore a new country, Greece would be a great option. But above all, Italy has the best food and shopping!

  2. Scotland and England sound like fun places to visit! I would definitely check out Costa Rica if you're looking for an engaging trip. I've heard many great things about it. I feel like any place you choose to go will be fun and relaxing. Every time I travel, I feel like I am escaping reality. I hope you have a safe and exciting trip!

  3. Definitely visit Lake District and do a boat ride on the Loch Ness!
Let me know if you get a sight of the Loch Ness Monster as I missed it the last time I was there :(

  4. Katie, it sounds like your going to have an amazing time. I've never been to Scotland, but I hear it's really beautiful. I've been to England a few time in the summer, and the weather is great! Where in England are you planning on going? I had a fun time exploring all the markets in London. Highly recommend!

  5. Scotland is so nice, I have been there once and it was astonishing with its magnificent landscapes and infinite grasslands. Once you are in London, you should find the time to go around Europe a little, airfares within the continent are very cheap. Hit me up if you plan to come to Italy

  6. Hi Katie! Scotland and England are both such beautiful countries and I hope you enjoy your trip. I have to add that traveling abroad with friends is such a great way to bond and share memories with each other. Just last summer I was in France and England with my friends and it was such a memorable fun trip. I have been to these countries before but seeing with friends felt like I got to experience the cities or towns differently. Have a great trip!

  7. The UK and Scotland are two of my favorite countries in the world: I have a bunch of family in London, Liverpool, and Manchester, and I did my study abroad at London School of Economics for my last quarter at UC Santa Barbara. If you need any recommendations, definitely let me know! So excited for you and I hope it is a blast!

  8. I am definitely a little jealous, I would also want to go for a long trip this summer. I don't know if you're a sports fan or not, but you should definitely try to go see a Premier League soccer game in England. It will be an experience, whether you love soccer or not.
