One of my goals for the New Year was to start living a healthier lifestyle. This includes eating well, meal prepping, and working out consistently. I started off strong, but once week 4 of the semester hit I found myself struggling to keep up. Balancing school, work, and a healthy lifestyle is a serious juggling act and I have no clue how some people live such clean and healthy lifestyles while in college.

My biggest struggle by far is time management. I wouldn’t say I’m the worst, but I’m definitely not the best. I usually plan my whole week out every Sunday, but throughout the week I find myself doing anything else except following my planner. Procrastination never fails to throw off my whole week. Because of this, I usually end up cutting out the time I would use to meal prep. Something else I find very difficult for me is eating carb free meals. Being Chinese-Filipino, I grew up eating rice with every dish so after 21 years it’s hard to feel satisfied having a carb free meal. Knowing this, I started checking up alternatives to rice, such as cauliflower rice and broccoli rice, but it wasn’t nearly as satisfying. This makes it really difficult for me to stay consistent-- I’d have one cheat day then end up cheating for the rest of the week.

Lastly, another issue I come across is finding the motivation to work out on a regular basis. I find working out at the gym alone boring and somewhat intimidating, especially when you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. I’ve been trying to stay active in different ways like dancing, taking yoga, and doing pilates, but I haven’t really found the one thing I love to do yet.

I know that adapting to a healthier lifestyle is difficult, so to any of you guys that successfully pull it off, please let me in on your secrets!

  1. Hi Katie,

I also had a new years resolution similar to yours! My goal is to go to the gym more often during the semester. I always made excuses about how I was not able to go to the gym because of school. But, I found that making a routine that fits your schedule really helps. It actually feels weird for me if I do not go to the gym at least once a week now. I hope this helps!

  2. My New Years resolution list also included working out more (which I haven't been keeping up with either). I've found it easier to go to the gym when I make plans to work out with friends- that way I have more motivation to go. Also, I want to suggest that you make a playlist before you go to the gym. That way, you can listen to music that you enjoy while exercising, and it won't be as boring for you. But generally, I think this is an awesome New Years resolution- good for you! And it's great that you're aware of the fact that you haven't been keeping up; this way you can make adjustments and make a conscious effort to improve/ work towards your goal.

  3. I loved reading this blog post Katie! I to have been very focused on living a healthier lifestyle, and have run into a lot of the same issues. One piece of advice I can give you especially when it comes to working out and eating healthier, is to find a cooking partner. This helps motivate and keep you on track. It is also more fun to cook and workout with a friend!

  4. I feel your struggle because I am in the same situation, I also have a very difficult time of going to the gym and eating healthy especially because of my procrastination and my lack of self-control in giving into eating unhealthy. One thing that has helped me although is finding someone who shares the same fitness goals and spending more time with them, this will lead you to becomes less distracted by other friends and unhealthy temptations.
